At St Dominic’s we aim to develop each student’s understanding, skills and strategies in Mathematics so that they can confidently use Maths in their everyday lives. We use the Victorian Curriculum, student assessment and data to target our Mathematics teaching and learning.
Explicit teaching practices
To make sure every student understands new concepts clearly and can apply them confidently, our teachers use explicit teaching practises.
Each lesson includes a daily review to help students recall prior learning and practise applying their knowledge in different ways.
We use multiple examples and non-examples to show what concepts look like in different contexts and to help students avoid common misunderstandings.
Lessons follow a gradual release of responsibility model, where teachers first model and explain strategies, then guide students through practice, and finally give them the opportunity to work independently.
This structured approach, combined with regular opportunities to practise and apply skills, helps students build a strong foundation in maths while developing confidence, problem-solving abilities, and a love of learning.
